Merox Catalyst
The catalyst used in the mercaptan refining process, which is known by the same name, is called Merox catalyst. The Merox process is the process of purifying mercaptan in oil, gas, gas condensate and hydrocarbons in general.
?What is mercaptan
Mercaptans are sulfur compounds attached to hydrocarbon rings. These compounds, which are also known as RSH based on their chemical formula, have an unpleasant and serious smell. Mercaptan compounds are toxic, corrosive and harmful to the environment. There are light and heavy mercaptans in various hydrocarbon cuts. Traces of mercaptans can be seen from the lightest hydrocarbon fractions such as methane to crude oil. Due to the unfavourable properties of mercaptans, it is tried to isolate or convert mercaptans in the first purification and refining processes.
Merox process
In the oil and gas and petrochemical industry, the process by which mercaptans are separated or refined from the main feed is called Merox. During the Merox process, in the presence of the Merox catalyst, mercaptans react with oxygen and RSH is converted to RSSR or disulfide. Disulfides are compounds that do not have the undesirable properties of mercaptans. This process, which was first presented by the American company Merox, is known by the same name. Today, some of the best catalyst manufacturers in the world produce Merox catalyst with different brand names. Among them are Axens, Merox, IVKAZ catalysts.
The catalyst of the IVKAZ company is the production of VINIUS Research Institute of Russia, which is a research center with a history of Russian oil. This catalyst, which is used in the Merox process, is used to purify mercaptans in oil and petroleum products, gas and gas condensate.
