What is the flash point?
In the previous articles published on Artin Azma Mehr website, we have emphasized that one of the most important things that should be taken care of in industrial and chemical laboratories is handling the chemicals used in these laboratories, which can be very dangerous.
The handling of these materials is very important and requires a high level of precision, as chemicals can be hazardous and flammable. For this reason, their transportation and storage must prioritize safety.
In previous articles, we have also mentioned that to store impure samples, such as petroleum cuts, it is necessary to conduct direct tests on them to determine their flammability. This testing is performed in chemical laboratories using devices that measure the flash point by open cup method. In this article, we would like to introduce you to another type of this device known as the closed cup flash point tester.
The device for determining the flash point in a closed method
We mentioned that one of the most important risks in laboratories is the handling and storage of chemicals, which requires careful attention to their transportation and safety. Chemicals that leave the laboratory may contain impurities, and in such cases, the unknown components present in them should be evaluated. Testing should be performed on these materials to determine their potential for fire hazard.
Measuring the flash point is one of the tests that can be employed for this purpose. Additionally, determining the ignition temperature or the formation of a flammable vapor mixture is another essential task that should be performed on the sample. The ignition temperature is the temperature at which a flammable vapor mixture forms in the air above the sample.
The aspects mentioned above are all carried out using the closed cup flash point tester, which allows for more precise measurements of the chemicals and ensures that there is no fire hazard present.
Features of the device for determining the flash point by closed method
The closed cup flash point tester is equipped with specialized thermometers that can measure temperatures up to 135 degrees Celsius. The sensitivity of these devices is 1 degree Celsius, and they are equipped with electric heaters. The heating capacity of this testing device complies with international standards, which include the following:
National Standard of Iran No. 19695
National Standard of Iran No. 12691
Petroleum Products
Determination of Flash Point by Closed Cup Method
National Standard of Iran No. 19695
As mentioned, this standard is used for measuring chemical substances using closed cup devices. According to National Standard of Iran No. 19695, the required temperature range must be a minimum of 40°C and a maximum of 370°C for accurate measurements. In this standard, for the temperature range of 60 to 190°C, automatic Pensky-Martens devices are used, which are the most commonly applied. This method is used to identify and determine non-flammable materials.
National Standard of Iran No. 12691
Another standard for determining the flash point using the closed cup method is National Standard of Iran No. 12691. This standard applies to flammable liquids with a closed flash point ranging from a minimum of 30°C to a maximum of 75°C. In this method, thermometers with uniform temperature measurement, such as IP75C and IP74C thermometers, as well as mercury thermometers, are used.
