Air compressor (model 60.500)
Gas fittings kit 4.078.000
Catalytic air purification filter for removal of organic impurities
Electronic gas flow indicator 214.5.183.004 or built-in gas flow indicator
Certified gas mixtures of the target sulfur-containing compounds

Method Description

The Pulsed Flame Photometric Detector (PFPD) used as part of the Chromatec-Crystal 9000 chromatograph is manufactured by OI Analytical, model 5383.

The detector features a modern design and provides optimized selective detection of sulfur and phosphorus compounds.

Pulsed Flame Photometric Detector (PFPD)

The 5383 PFPD includes four main components:

  • 5383 detector assembly
  • 5383 electronic detector controller
  • 5383 pneumatic detector controller
  • detector gas circuit components
  • PulseView™ Monitor software

The 5383 electronic detector controller includes signal-processing electronics and the power supply.

The 5383 pneumatic detector controller consists of a needle valve and flow-control modules.

Using PulseView™ Monitor, the operation of the PFPD can be optimized. All operating parameters of the PFPD can be configured and optimized within the software.

Once all parameters have been uploaded to the detector’s electronic controller for continuous operation, PulseView™ Monitor software is no longer required.

Main Advantages of PFPD Compared to Conventional FPD

  • Higher sensitivity
    For sulfur: < 1 pg S/s
    For phosphorus: < 100 fg P/s
  • Much lower hydrocarbon signal quenching effect compared to the classical FPD
  • Equimolar detector response
  • The PFPD can simultaneously record two signals:
a sulfur channel and a hydrocarbon channel
  • Maximum temperature up to 420°C
  • Lower hydrogen consumption

Standards and Applications

STO Gazprom 5.12-2008 describes a gas chromatographic method using a Pulsed Flame Photometric Detector.

According to ASTM D6228, either FPD or PFPD may be used.

Both methods provide high sensitivity for sulfur-containing components in natural gas — 0.1 mg/m³ — but it should be noted that the best sensitivity is achieved with PFPD.

Standards

ASTM D6228
Standard Test Method for Determination of Sulfur Compounds in Natural Gas and Gaseous Fuels by Gas Chromatography and Flame Photometric Detection

STO Gazprom 5.12-2008
Natural combustible gas. Procedure for determination of sulfur-containing compounds by chromatographic method.
